Artwork Description
In Circo, Magdiel Garcia captures the graceful tension of two acrobats frozen mid-performance, their forms abstracted into an elegant interplay of curves, angles, and open spaces. Carved from 175-year-old mahogany salvaged from colonial Cuban homes, the sculpture carries with it the weight of history—transformed into a celebration of movement, balance, and connection.
The two figures emerge from the composition as a continuous, intertwined structure. A flowing, ribbon-like line evokes one body in motion, while the grounded geometric forms suggest a supporting partner. Together, they create a visual rhythm that conveys both strength and fragility, trust and precision.
The contrast between the rich, dark exterior and the golden-yellow interior planes heightens the sense of depth and dynamism. The title Circo (circus) reflects not just the spectacle of performance, but also the emotional and physical harmony required in acrobatics—mirroring themes of partnership and resilience.
Through this work, Garcia bridges past and present, turning centuries-old wood into a vessel for contemporary expression, and inviting viewers to witness both the elegance of the human form and the enduring spirit of Cuban craftsmanship.
